WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TWO TOP RIVALS COMPETE IN A WORLD CLASS TOURNAMENT?

2018.12.03

Two fierce competitors will face again for the 135th time at Rugby World Cup 2019™. Scotland v Ireland, a titanic battle sure to offer fans an experience of a lifetime.

The two teams with a passion for rugby have much in common and not only because of geographical proximity. Both nations have previously progressed through to the quarter-final stage numerous times in a Rugby World Cup tournament and will be facing each other as their first opponent in 2019.

The rivalry is immense between the two teams. Scotland have won 67 times and Ireland have won 62 of those encounters (with five draws). Since 2010, out of the 11 matches they have played, Ireland have won seven and Scotland four. The last time these rivals met in a Rugby World Cup tournament was in 1991, seven Rugby World Cups ago with Scotland running out winners 24-15.

However, Ireland have recently shown how formidable they are as a team and have built continuously off their first ever win against New Zealand, back in 2016. Their earlier success this year as 2018 Six Nations Champions is further proving their consistency, ability and desire to win. Rightfully, the team has earned their spot as number two in the World.

Ireland has managed to reach the quarter-finals six times at a Rugby World Cup tournament. Despite this, the team has never been able to progress beyond this stage. This time around they will be dreaming of greater glory with many people predicting an Ireland v New Zealand Final. Will this be Irelands year?

The Scottish team will also be wanting to prove themselves in the next big tournament. They are currently ranked as the sixth best team in the world according to World Rugby rankings. The furthest they have made it in a Rugby World Cup was in 1991, when they finished in 4th place.

Scotland and Ireland have several world class players representing their national teams. The Fly half matchup between Johnny Sexton (arguably one of the best 10 in the world) and Finn Russell (who's flare, and vision turn Scotland into a different team) will be an unmissable spectacle.
